Dehradun is a popular destination for travelers who want to explore the nearby hill stations, wildlife sanctuaries, temples, and museums. Here are some tips on how to spend 2 days in Dehradun and make the most of your trip.
Day 1: Visit the Robber’s Cave and the Forest Research Institute
Start your day with a visit to the Robber’s Cave, a natural cave formation that is said to have been used by robbers as a hideout in the past. The cave is about 600 meters long and has a stream flowing through it.
You can walk inside the cave and enjoy the cool and refreshing atmosphere. The cave is located about 8 kilometers from the city center and can be reached by taxi or bus.
After exploring the cave, head to the Forest Research Institute, one of the oldest and largest institutions of its kind in India. The institute is spread over 450 hectares of land and houses a museum, a library, a botanical garden, and several research laboratories. The museum showcases various aspects of forestry, such as wood anatomy, pathology, entomology, silviculture, and wildlife. The institute is open from 9:30 am to 5 pm on all days except Sundays and public holidays.
Day 2: Explore the Sahastradhara Springs and the Mindrolling Monastery
On your second day, visit the Sahastradhara Springs, a scenic spot where a stream of water falls from a height of about 9 meters into a pool. The water is said to have medicinal properties due to its high sulphur content. You can take a dip in the pool or enjoy a boat ride or a cable car ride. The springs are located about 14 kilometers from the city center and can be reached by taxi or bus.
Next, head to the Mindrolling Monastery, one of the largest Buddhist monasteries in India. The monastery was established in 1965 by Tibetan refugees and belongs to the Nyingma sect of Buddhism. The monastery has a stunning architecture, with a 60-meter-high stupa that houses several relics, statues, and paintings.
